PROGRAM LEVEL OUTCOMES

Associate’s Level

Students in the Liberal Studies program at Southeastern University will graduate with the following skills:

  • Write formal essays which are logically organized, have a clear sense of purpose, are based on sound research and demonstrate a command of the practices of effective writing (i.e., correct spelling, usage, grammar and punctuation). 
  • Deliver effective oral presentations that engage the audience through the use of voice and body language and demonstrate a command of the English language.
  • Demonstrate information literacy skills by effectively framing research questions; utilizing a variety of tools to gather, organize and evaluate sources of information; analyzing and synthesizing information; and, appropriately documenting sources.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze, synthesize and evaluate a spectrum of ideas to make reasoned judgments.
  • Demonstrate quantitative and scientific reasoning skills by interpreting information presented in formulas, tables, and graphs and drawing appropriate inferences; utilizing the scientific method when appropriate; appropriately applying inductive and deductive reasoning, experimentation and the scientific method; and solving real world problems using these skills.
  • Demonstrate technology competence by using computers to research, analysis and communication in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrate social, cultural and ethical awareness by recognizing the role of institutions, government and politics in a global society; analyzing problems from cultural, ethical, and historical perspectives; appreciating the arts as an expression of culture; and, appreciating the problems inherent in balancing the responsibility of individual needs with societal needs.

Demonstrate the ability to work in teams by understanding the factors influencing human behavior; listening effectively and critically; contributing to the development and implementation of plans to achieve group goals; and, appreciating interdependent relationships and acting appropriately.

 

Students in Child Development at Southeastern will graduate with the following skills:

  • Students prepared in associate degree programs use their understanding of young children’s characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on children’s development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for all children.
  • Students prepared in associate degree programs know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of children’s families and communities.
  • Students prepared in associate degree programs know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies.
  • Students prepared in associate degree programs integrate their understanding of and relationship with children and families; their understanding of developmentally effective approaches to teaching and learning.
  • Students prepared in associate degree programs identify and conduct themselves as members of the early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to early childhood practice. 

Bachelor’s Level

Students in the Liberal Studies degree program will have the following skills upon graduation:

  • Write formal essays which are logically organized, have a clear sense of purpose, are based on sound research and demonstrate a command of the practices of effective writing (i.e., correct spelling, usage, grammar and punctuation).
  • Deliver effective oral presentations that are convincing and engage the audience through the use of voice and body language, demonstrate a command of the English language, and use appropriate visual aids effectively.
  • Demonstrate advanced information literacy skills by effectively framing research questions; utilizing a variety of tools to gather, organize and evaluate sources of information; analyzing and synthesizing information; and, appropriately documenting sources.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills and demonstrate accomplishment in the ability to analyze, synthesize and evaluate a spectrum of ideas to make reasoned judgments regarding complex problems.
  • Demonstrate quantitative and scientific reasoning skills by interpreting information presented in formulas, tables, and graphs and drawing appropriate inferences; utilizing the scientific method when appropriate; appropriately applying inductive and deductive reasoning, experimentation and the scientific method; and solving real world problems using these skills.
  • Demonstrate advanced technology competence by using computers to research, analysis and communication in a legal and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrate social, cultural and ethical awareness by recognizing the role of institutions, government and politics in a global society; analyzing problems from cultural, ethical, and historical perspectives; appreciating the arts as an expression of culture; appreciating the problems inherent in balancing the responsibility of individual needs with societal needs; and will demonstrate strong leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in teams by understanding the factors influencing human behavior; listening effectively and critically; contributing to the development and implementation of plans to achieve group goals; and, appreciating interdependent relationships and acting appropriately.  

Demonstrate lifelong learning skills and capabilities by seeking knowledge from a broad range of sources and using that knowledge to address personal and societal issues.

Students in the Child Development program at Southeastern will graduate with the following skills:

  • Candidates apply their understanding of young children’s characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on children’s development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for all children.
  • Candidates know about, understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of children’s families and communities. They apply this understanding to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and to involve all families in their children’s development and learning.
  • Candidates know about and understand the goals, benefits, and apply of assessment. They know about and apply systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in a responsible way, in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence children’s development and learning.
  • Candidates integrate their understanding of and relationships with children and families; their understanding of developmentally effective approaches to teaching and learning; and their knowledge of academic disciplines to design, implement, evaluate and apply experiences that promote positive development and learning for all children.
  • Candidates identify and conduct themselves as members of the early childhood profession. They know and apply ethical guidelines and other professional standards related to early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies.
